I would like to download maps using my WiFi connection, which seems to be much more reliable than my Activsync connection. When I enable WiFi, then start BCN, it gives me the messge that the server is not available or some such. Is there a specific procedure to connecting to the Terraserver through WiFi?

Here is something to try: see if you can get to webpages. (google.com, etc) on Pocket Internet Explorer through wifi. In most cases, if you are able to do that, you can also download terraserver data.

If not, you might want to send the Bcnav2log.txt file from your \My Documents directory to support, to see if there is an error unrelated to connectivity.

I did try using PIE, and it was working at the time. But BCN gave me an error that it could not conect. Are you saying that it should be automatic? It should sense the WiFi connection and use that?

I did have issues in the earlier versions(1.5 or so). But since 2.0 I know I have been able to download usinig Wifi Hotspots.........It's just slower than the AS connection.

Slower? Wow. My AS connection is horribly unreliable. It takes me a week of nights sometimes to get one map.

 Sounds like you have a problem with your ActiveSync. Do you have glitches with AS while performing other functions as well, or only when downloading maps ?

I used to have bad freeze-ups till I changed some AS settings, and started downloading smaller map blocks - simply adding on in increments.

What version of AS are you running? When I was running 4.1 I had lots of issues. I upgraded, & now everything works a lot better.

MY AS is kept current with the newest version. I will check today to see if I have the newest version. AS works totally fine with everything else. I do not have any glitches with anything else. But the connection is ALWAYS broken while I am downloading maps. I have to re-start multiple times during a download to get it to finish. Anything larger than 5x5 is almost impossible for me to download.

I tried my WiFi connection last night to download and it connected properly. I downloaded a small map first to test it, and it worked fine. I don't know why it would not work last week. I have not yet tested it on same-size maps as I usually download, so I do not know yet if it is slower than my AS. It may be slower, but if I do not have to babysit it and lose connection overnight, it may be faster in a practical sense. I will try tonight and see what the download speed is. Thanks for all the help. BCN/Nathan is probably the best customer and tech service in the entire industry. Maybe the whole internet!

When I am sync'd I can download a virgin(completely new) 5X5 map @ 1:4 resolution(topo's & aerials) in less than 5 min.  If I step up to 1:1 on the aerials it takes less than 10 min.  I am using a Dell Axim X51V and ActiveSync 4.2.0.

With the Wifi speed is affected by my proximity to my weak Gateway wireless router. I really need to get off my wallet and get a better router. Any suggestions?

I have had trouble connecting to terraserver with both methods.  The speed of which depends on your hardware the info is passing thru.(wireless router, usb hub, internet speed, etc.)  What I have found to be the case in my situation, if I do a soft reset on my ipaq before connecting with terraserver, I had very little problem.  I dont know, but maybe the device is storing settings from the last time it was connected???  Just my thoughts and something else to try. 

Wow. A 5x5 map through AS takes me hours to download. I wonder what settings I should change?

What resolution are you using? I usually start off any particular map download @ 1:4, then as I find a spot that I want @ 1:1 (only applies to aerial) I'll get that specific area. You can also choose not to download the aerial data or topo data which will also cut down on time & space requirements. Hope this helps.

Wow - I am using the same thing and get no where close to that speed.  What PC and ISP are you using?  Where are you located if you are willing to share.

Using a Gateway 610 Entertainment PC(I think they only made them 1 yr.) 2.1ghz P4 over our local high speed DSL. Located in middle TN.
