Title: Large maps (800mb) urban/sat -- cause GPS to misbehave
Post by: BruteForce on January 08, 2008, 07:52:23 AM
I recently started downloading highly detailed maps (1/4 detail with urban @ 10x10 miles). Upon loading BCN on my iPaq and loading the map, the iPaq doesnt seem to be able to keep up with the navigation. The directional arrow just kind of blinds in one spot, then a few  minutes later MAY update to my new location.

Is this simply because the map is too large? Any fix for this?

Some members of this forum have had good luck with maps of that size - but it can be a challenge.

The bottleneck could be reading the data from various parts of the storage card - the speed of the storage card definitely makes a difference.

A recent report indicates that turning on places can be a bottleneck in large maps. I've been working on that but can't say for sure yet.

These large maps seem to be working fine on my new Dell Axim x51v, where they werent on my older iPaq 3970; I'm using the same exact SD card, so perhaps CPU speed is a factor.

The only issue that exists now is with that large map loaded, if I attempt to load Waypoints (~500), it crashes BCN.. memory constraint or something?

Thanks for the excellent support!

Could be, but it should handle 500 waypoints OK. Do the crash details provide any clues?
