Francis Tapon, author of "Hike your Own Hike", will be attempting a two way hike of the Continental Divide Trail.

As one of his chosen sponsors, BackCountry Navigator is providing him with a storage card and customized map.

Tha above map fits into 887 Megabytes, and is about a 1.5 diameter swath following the expected route. While BackCountry Navigator has handled large databases before, this has been an special challenge because the maps tiles are so distributed, and the track data is bigger than what we've handled before.

The things we have worked on to meet this challenge will benefit all users as they are rolled out. They include faster algorithms for rendering tiles in a large, dispersed map, a more scalable algorithm for importing and displaying large tracks, and the ability to download from the map screen by marking rectangles.

Some of you may have seen Francis Tapon in his inspiring lecture series at REI. I will be going to the Portland REI this Wednesday night to witness that. To learn more about Francis Tapon and his CDT hike, see this website:

I've been distracted by some other priorities for the last month or so, but early next week I can post some more details of what is happening with BackCountry Navigator DE.
