Well, i'm setting off to thru-hike the AT, and i'm sure glad I came accross this software. I've been trying out some other software for the last few weeks and being disappointed by one aspect or another of everything i've run into.

That having been said:

This is the coolest PPC app i've ever played with, and probably the coolest app i've played with. I've imported the ATC shelter waypoint data and i'm in the process of creating an AT map. As soon as I make sure it works with my GPS reciever, i'm going to buy a license.

Once i finish this map i'll try to find a webserver to put it on, so that anyone hiking the AT will have a map. Smiley

Quick question: When it comes to map edges, is there any way to trim the whitespace, or choose which map peice gets laid on top?

Thanks a ton,
Eli Foley

I might need a little clarification.

And are you using marked rectangles for downloading from the map screen? It is a new feature, but is described in the tips section of the forum.

The problem only seems to exist in the first 30 miles or so of the AT. It looks like the whitespace on the edge of the topos was left on after scanning.

Here is what i'm talking about:

OK, I know what you mean then.

84 deg is a UTM Zone boundary. This is the only place you will see map edges on TerraServer tiles. Most maps you download won't run into this, but you are assured of running into this fro a long thru huking trail. The CDT crossed the boundary 6 or 7 times.

BackCountry Navigator tries to do the best it can there. It will render tiles that are in the same UTM Zone first, then reproject and try to find any tiles in the adjacent UTM Zone.

I wish TerraServer didn't have all those map edges scanned. I don't what good they think they are.

There is not an easy way to get around them, unless I add a way for you to delete tiles. Even then, you could only delete full tiles, but it does look as if there are full tiles of junk there.

When you are actually navigating, this won't be as big of a deal. It will look like you are about to go off the edge of the map and then pop, you jumped to the next zone.

How soon does your AT hike begin? That will tell me if I have time.

And how are the maps fitting? The CDT is about 887 Megabytes, but that was with some precision downloads.

I was supposed to leave today, but the solar charger i ordered from the U.K. on the 5th still hasn't arrived. Hopefully I will hear back from them and be able to depart sometime in the next few days.

My biggest problem now is downloading the entire trail via my pda.

Sometimes when I am near a zone boundry using the "rectangles" selection mode, and select from one zone to another, it will erroneously select a ~300mile wide rectangle. What's worse, is, when i download that map and scroll to the erroneously selected portion, i will get display artifacts that don't go away until i create a new db3 file.

an "undo last selection" feature would be great here, so that every time i get a bad rectangle i can just undo, rather than having to clear all the selections i've made.

Also, if there is any way you can get me a copy of that win32 compile of the map editor you were using for the CDT, it would make my life alot easier. Even over activesync i'm getting random transfer errors.

Feel free to email me. I'd be more than happy to try to help you through some of these issues. I'm really impressed with this software so far. (I work QA at a mobile app software company and have a fair bit of experience in .net)

Thanks,
Eli Foley

I had a bounceback at your email address because of the attachements in a zip file.

I'll try again when I can.

Yeah, sorry about that. Gmail is fine with .rar files, however.
