Nathan, On a IPAQ 5555 with the NAVMAN 3450 GPS Sleeve; i reset the PDA and installed BackCountry first then re-install all other GPS programs.  I configured the PDA to use COM4, then press connect, it claims to have connected to the GPS, but it never shows any Satellites or gives a position. the unit is NMEA compliant (see below link)

any suggestions

Have you already gone through GPSInfo tool from NavMan's site?

What does COM4 say in the GPSConfig dialog?

Most GPSs should not need GPS Drivers. However, the NavMan site has serial drivers that may be necessary.

I don't have access to a Navman, but there is some tips and updates on the Navman site that may help. If not, perhaps BackCountry Navigator is connecting at the wrong speed. It is also important that no other applications are using the GPS.

Nathan, i have installed the GPS serial drivers to correct a problem Microsoft Streets 2006 had using the GPS.  Navman, Delorme, and Microsoft all use the GPS sleeve with no problem.  The Navman baud rate is auto set to 57,600 and BCN auto accepts baud rates (correct).

COM4 - Navman Serial Driver

The GPS info tool is a basic gps activation tool to get a lat/long/speed.

Ok. IF GPSInfo and the other programs are working, BackCountry Navigator *should* work, as long as the other programs aren't in memory at the same time. It is rare that it would not work, so I'm doing some more investigation.

About the only thing you can tweak is the connection timeout right now, (up to 20 seconds) but there are some other parameters I may try if it is likely to fix the problem.

Does the status bar stay on Connected .. or does it flash to Disconnect and then make attempts to reconnected.

About 8 other people have tried the software with a NavMan, but unfortunately I haven't gotten reports from them of either success or failure.

Nathan, I set the timeout to 2000ms and pressed the connect button  and "connected to gps device" message appeared. It never re-attempts  nor does it blink.

I am currently ebay-ing for a HP bluetooth GPS and for GEOCaching I will use it.

Bluetooth GPSs are nice, especially if you are using a protective case like the OtterBox.

I found out more about the Navman.

1.1.5 is just posted. It allows you to specify baud rate of 57600 explicitly. It's possible that our automatic choice of baudrate will fail. All NMEA devices *should* support 4800 in addition to their other speeds, but that isn't always the case.

The other possible solution is a little more tricky. Apparently Navman software can disable certain sentences that it doesn't use, and they remain disabled after it runs. That doesn't affect all software, and I'm not sure if it is an issue for BackCountry Navigator yet.

Let me know if 1.1.5 works on the Navman, so I'll know for you and future customers

Hi!

I can't get BN to connect to my GPS.

I'd really like to use this program for camping and rock-climbing trips.  Thanks so much for making it.

I have an HP 6515, which is a phone/pda/gps combo, running windows mobile 2003 #2, with a square screen.

Installing BN and downloading maps as incredibly easy, and downloading was pretty fast over the phone's GPRS. I can zoom & scroll around the maps.

When I click Configure on the GPS tab, the phone's internal GPS "Internal AGPS NMEA" is already selected, on the correct port, COM 7.  I have tried setting the Timeout to between 3000 and 20000 milliseconds.

When I click "Connect", the status bar cycles between 4 messages:
"Connecting to GPS device on COM 7"
"Connected to GPS device..."
<Some longer message flashes here for a split-second>
"Disconnected from GPS device."

Microsoft Streets & Trips is able to connect to the GPS, start it tracking, and get positions - no problem. The phone has an "agps" which "assists" the gps by downloading the current ephemeris, but that's not a problem - I downloaded a fresh ephemeris just before using BN.

Do you have any idea why this is not working, or what I should try?

Thanks!

I've heard the 6515 has an issue where the built in GPS returns 0 for bytes available. So we keep trying to recconnect. Apparently some other programs have gotten around this.

I'll check into this and see the status. There was a possibility that a workaround could be put into our gps driver. I don't know yet if it will be possible in 1x or if it will be in our upcoming 2.0 release.

I'm in exactly the same boat with an iPAQ 6515.  Please do find a workaround.  I currently use Outdoor Navigator Maptech) and odgps with the internal GPS just fine, so there is a solution.

thanks.

I've rereleased the build. It appears one was mislabeled. Thanks for pointing that out.

Nathan, all is well.  Having the ability to choose the baud rate worked.

Note to your developers : A nice to see, would be a desktop version of the "DATA CENTER".  It would be quicker to download larger areas then use removeable media "CF or SD" to put it on the PDA.

Thanks

Where do you download 1.1.5?  The website only has 1.1.4.

http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/view/16/52/ 1.15 is listed as the active version. I believe the page you referred to only has an historic listing of all past versions. It should include updates in 1.15 though.
