Hi there, new to the forum.. looks like a fantastic piece of software here, has anyone discovered the appropriate settings for the internal GPS in the Tilt?

I am also interested in knowing if anyone has gotten this to work. It is apparently the same device as the HTC Tyn II.
The device reportedly has a custom implementation of the GPS Intermediate Driver that is causing some trouble.
One suggestion is to turn off "Manage GPS Automatically" in the GPS Control Panel, and then try automatic detection. I don't have one of these devices to try this myself.

Well, it's still not working unfortunately!
I tried doing a hard reset, to get the GPS back to baseline as suggested in a couple of other Kaiser/TyTn/8925 forums.. once I did that, the GPS was up and running and worked well with Google Maps.
When I installed BCN, everything locked up. I did a soft reset and found that my GPS was offline again, to all applications. Most frustrating!
Any thoughts are most welcome at this point.

One suggestion that I've received is to do detection with the Options->GPS->Bypass GPID checked (requires 2.5.0). You will have to make sure that no other application is using the GPS.
However, because the shared driver may be the only way to access the GPS, this may not work, but it may at least stop it from blocking the other applications.
If other applications have stopped working, it is probably because BackCountry Navigator has altered the GPS settings. You should change them back to their factory defaults in Settings->System->GPS.
If any of you are willing to send your device to Colorado for a week or so, I can check with my associate there and see if that will help.

So after doing a basic up-from-the-ground reinstall of all my other apps, the GPS did start responding again.. It acquires a fix with VisualGPS CE and with Windows Live Search.
The latest development is that BCN simply won't run anymore. I've completely wiped it off and reinstalled, along with the English Messages CAB file, and I get the little rainbow-spinning wheel when I attempt to run BCN, but then nothing happens at all! Curious.
Thanks for the kind offer of in-person troubleshooting the device Nathan, but I don't think I can be without my phone/schedule/email for even a day at this point.. bosses would NOT be happy!

Well, after umpteen uninstall/reinstall cycles, BCN is now operating on the Tilt!
It will not recognize the internal GPS until you point it to COM4/9600 baud.
Thereafter, everything seems to operate smoothly.. all the features are functioning. Feel free to email me with questions or for additional details.
Happy navigating!

I'm sure others will be glad to know how to get it to work. Sorry it has been so much trouble.
A few questions:
1. Did you have the menuitem Options->GPS->Bypass GPID checked in BackCountry Navigator?
2. What are the GPS Settings in your control panel? (Settings->Systems->GPS).

So the Bypass GPID item was not checked.
As to the control panel settings, the Tilt has a known bug/issue with the GPS.. if you access the control panel icon for the GPS and start fiddling with settings, the whole thing goes dead and won't respond to any programs. A hard reset is the only way to get it back again. This bug has been pretty well documented and people are working on a fix.
So all we can really do is change settings in programs that access the GPS until we find what we need. Com4, 9600 baud!

I too tried getting BCN to work on my Tilt and not only didn't it work it also killed my Tilt! After the first install I would just get the spinning disc, so I installed it again which made it work, but now my GPS is dead, and my phone is now soo unstable I'm going to a restore (Thank you Sprite Backup!) from a couple of days ago..
So seems to me there are some serious issues with this app and the Tilt or WM 6 that need to be worked out. BCN looks like a great piece of software, but if it causes havoc like this on a normal basis I don't see myself using it anytime soon..
Thanks, and hope these issues can be resolved soon!

BackCountry Navigator works just fine on WM6, and finds the x800 GPS without any extra effort, plus a whole range of others. It is HTC's implementation of the GPS Intermediate Driver that appears to be flaky. From another post, it appears that you don't need BackCountry Navigator to experience this: simply changing anything in the GPS Control Panel will cause trouble.
I have a colleague in Colorado who very much wants to fix this, but I need better information to give him.
This much I know:
1. Changing *anything* in the GPS Control Panel is bad.
2. Running detection, by default, will access the GPS Control Panel, so it will also cause problems.
This is what I don't know:
1. ByPass GPID is a flag I put into the Options. This was suggested by my GPS colleague as a way to prevent detection. But has anyone tried it?
2. Will specifying the right settings manually work? lbb8n claims that COM4/9600 baud will work, if you don't change anything in the GPS control panel. However, I am hearing right that everyone else tried that and it didn't work? I'm not sure how to report this? Who else has tried it?
3. Has anyone asked HTC why changing settings in the GPS Control panel irreversibly kills the GPS? This sounds like a pretty significant bug, and I wonder why they allow the GPS Settings to be visible in this case.
4. Is anyone willing to send their device to Colorado for a week or so? Or know where I can rent one?
5. Other applications, like the bundled ones, apparently work. What settings are the other applications using?

Standby.
I've received word of a possible workaround for the device's tendency to hang.
I'll be contacting some of you individually to see if you are willing to try out the fix before I publish it.

Well, I did some more playing around and what I found is that since I already had the Compact Framework installed, then cancelled the new install of the CF it hosed my phone! Turns out that even before it asks you if it's OK to wipe out the previous install (of anything!) that it's already started and deleted some things, in this case it was part of the Compact Framework..
Nice, eh?
After I did the restore, then reinstalled without the CF everything seems to work ok. BCN doesn't always seems to start for whatever reason, but if I do a soft reset it'll typically start, and I do have the patch installed..
Oh, one thing I discovered is that you should never hit the Detect button when setting up your GPS, if you do that you'll screw up your GPS as mentioned above...
Aother than that BCN seems to work quite well, I haven't done any Caching yet, but have been playing around with download maps and setting things up and from what I've seen it looks pretty cool..
We'll see after this weekend!
Just thought I'd update my original posts with some better experiences!
Thanks!

Restoring GPSID Settings On Affected Devices
If you don't wish to perform a hard reset (and I can't say I blame them), they can use a registry editor to reset the HTC's GPSID settings. The registry will look like this after a hard reset:
\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Drivers
\GPSOneDevice
DriverName TAI
FriendlyName QualComm GpsOne Card, version 0.0
InterfaceType POLL
PollInterval 500
Version 1 \GPSOneEmulate
Filex \windows\GPSOneFileSimulation.txt
FriendlyName QualComm GpsOne File, version 0.0
\GPSOnePort
CommPort COM1:
FriendlyName QualComm GpsOne Card, version 0.0
InterfaceType COMM
\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\ActiveDevice
Context 305414496
DLL GPSID_QCT.dll
Flags 2
Index 4
Keep 1
Prefix COM
BCN may modify the "ActiveDevice" key with the Prefix and Index which it finds during detection. The keys starting with "GPSOne" will not need to be modified. Here are the typical steps you would need to perform to restore their registry:
1) First, delete the "Control Panel Configured Device" key created by BCN:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\Control Panel Configured Device
2) Second, the Index and Prefix values underneath the "ActiveDevice" key should be set to "4" and "COM"
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\ActiveDevice

I've posted a link to 2.5.2 in the downloads area. We are trying out a fix that will hopefully avoid destabilizing the HTC Kaiser, HTC Tyn II, and AT&T 8925 (Tilt).
If we can get some people to try it, we can know if the fix is real and put it in a general release.
This may have been avoided if the qualcomm driver had been implemented to standards.
