I have a Dell Axim x51 with a new Garmin GPS 10x Bluetooth GPSr.  I just got the Garmin as a replacement for the one I left on the roof of my car.  The previous model worked flawlessly with BCN and I don’t remember having any trouble setting it up.  I set it up sometime in March '07 (probably using the "Detect" button), and never changed the port/speed settings.  My Garmin software will connect to the new GPS flawlessly, but no luck connecting with BCN.  My mistake may be that before downloaded and installed the latest version of BCN before trying to connect the new GPSr.

Process:
I went to Bluetooth settings and added the device, and clicked to enable Serial port.

Under Settings -> System -> GPS:
GPS Program port: GPD1 (default, I’ve also tried COM7)
GPS Hardware Port: COM7, Baud: 115,200 (default, I’ve tried others)

In BCN I’ve tried the auto-detect (just uses the settings above) and various other random COM ports and bauds.

I always get this error message:
Quote
“No GPS Data is being received from NMEA-0183 Data Stream (Port: at speed). Check that the device is connected and in NMEA mode, check port and baud settings, and ensure that it is not locked by other GPS programs.”
“Port” is GDP1 if using auto-detect and COMn if using a manual com port (n=7, 8, etc.).  “Speed” is the baud rate.

I have nothing else connected to the system, and I’ve reset both the GPSr and my PPC several times since last running the Garmin software.  What am I doing wrong here?  Is BCN seeing the GPSr (implying bad data stream), or is it not (implying incorrect port/speed combination)?

Also, as near as I can tell, BCN currently does NOT have a way to automatically detect a GPSr... you either manually enter the info into BCN or manually enter the info under Settings -> System -> GPS.

If there are settings in the GPS Control Panel, and Manage GPS Automatically is checked, BCN will assume the settings are correct. If you get no data from this port, you will see the timeout message.

If Manage GPS Automatically is not checked in the settings, BCN should search hardware ports.

Is it possible that Garmin is communicating using some Garmin protocol instead of NMEA?

I've tried unchecking "automatically", but I don't know if I did a port search after that.  But I remembered that BeeLineGPS had a auto port-search option, so I installed that program with no luck. My PPC finds the GPSr instantly, so I don't think it's a Bluetooth problem.  My Garmin software communicates flawlessly (I took a trip to NC and back yesterday), so it's working.  My previous (supposedly identical) unit worked with BCN, so at least THAT unit didn't use proprietary encoding.  I'm going to try calling Garmin today, but I'm not forseeing them being very helpful with someone else's software.  If I can't get it to work I'll just return it.

Garmin confirmed that the GPS 10x transmits a NMEA data stream.  I tried uninstalling BNC then re-installing the previous version, no go.  I tried deleting everything and starting over, no go. Do you know of any way to check the data stream directly?  I have about a week left before I have to return it.

Did they tell you how to make it transmit an NMEA data stream? Everything I've read on the subject suggests that it can transmit NMEA OR Garmin Protocol, and the Garmin utilities that came with it are needed to switch it.

What port and baud is Garmin connecting on?

No, she just said it transmitted NMEA.  I assumed she meant by default.

This makes sense of one issue... after I had the GPSr connected to the Garmin Mobile 10 Software, I always had to hard-reset the PPC and restart the GPSr before I could connect to BCN.  I assume my earlier unit defaulted to NMEA and this unit defaults to Garmin Proprietary. I guess the next call to Garmin is to ask for some sort of settings software (I can't find anything like this on the install CD).

I can't figure this out.  The manual doesn't say, but I'll look into it.
