I'm a Professional Land Surveyor using a TDS Nomad. I've been doing some testing of accuracy, and noticed I have about a 45' shift to the East collecting waypoints with BCN. As I look at the fix screen I see Magnetic North.

Does BCN use Magnetic North or Geodetic North?

Thanks!

In general, BCN will report true compass numbers on the Nav screen. We do not try to compensate for magnetic variation, because the receivers either don't report this number or report it unreliably.

For the Nomad, you will need to activate the VTG sentence in order to get bearing updates as explained on this page:

However, the bearings should be a separate issue from whether you get accurate readings when collecting waypoints.

There may be some more things I can learn about the Nomad by looking at my notes from when I had the demo unit from them. I'll be able to look at that later today.

My experience with the Nomad is that it doesn't report Magnetic variation which is the case for most receivers. The VTG sentence has a value for magnetic bearing but it was always zero.

Tell me more about your experience with recording waypoints when you get a chance.
