In 2.0, apparently, our device detection scheme is finding the "Shared GPS device" by default. This may have caused some trouble for some of you that have been able to use a specific port with other programs.

To setup the shared GPS:

Go to Settings-> System -> GPS.

For the GPS Program Port, use an unused port. On Access, choose manage GPS Automatically.

For the GPS  Hardware Port, choose the appropriate COM port and baud rate for your device. This may be from device documentation, or something you have found to work with other software. For bluetooth devices, it is the outgoing serial port.

On the Access Tab, check Manage GPS Automatically ( worked for me, but you can also try it without.)

You will still need to do the paring in Bluetooth and choose the serial port that you create there for the Hardware port.

I did this with a X51V and successfully found a bluetooth GPS device.

Hopefully, this helps some people out. If this doesn't work for everybody on WM5, then we will try some more things.

I'm using a Cingular 8125 and a BT-338 bluetooth GPS.  I've been able to set up and use several other GPS apps.  Backcountry navigator does not find/detect the GPS.  I have it set up on com 6.  Is there any way I can manually configure?

I would check to see that your GPS settings have the appropriate baud rate.

Version 2.1.0 (not quite out yet), will have an option to specify port and baud. I'm hoping to see that one out within a day or two.

My only suggestion for WM5 users is to install all the packages, .NET CF 2 English Messages, .NET Compact Framework 2.0, and BCN of course, irregardless of what the installer says. Don't bother trying to skip anything the installer reports as installed. I could not launch BCN until all the packages went in.

I am using an iPaq hx2795 with Qstarz BT-Q1000. I have tested on PC with USB and Bluetooth, and connected via Bluetooth with my PDA. Everything works great. I find the logging function pretty nice on the Q1000, on the PC I had the best luck with export to Google Keyhole, gpsbabel to gpx, then import. Navigation mode works flawlessly with BCN, of course. Very nice. Thanks for the great software package.

OK, here come the dumb questions.
#1 - How do I make the GPS get a position fix?

Done so far - I got my new Pharos 535 in the mail and I got the basic PDA stuff working. I got the BCN software installed, both on the device and on my desktop, and I successfully downloaded maps for my present location and I've been able to move around and zoom in and out on them.

However, I can't get a GPS signal so far. I'm guessing it might have to do with the settings covered in this topic. On the device, under Settings, I've got "Programs" set to COM4 (which was the default value) "Hardware" set to COM6 and 9600 baud, and "Access" set to "manage GPS automatically".

Within BCN, on the GPS tab, one option box is set to "shared GPS device" (the only option available) and the other two boxes are "COM6" and "9600" baud, apparently reflecting my choices on the device under the Hardware tab.

I've looked through all of my documentation and the various "specifications" lists there and on Pharos' web site, and I see no mention of baud rate in any context, nor mention of which port my GPS resides in.

Possibly part of the problem is I've never used the GPS on this device so don't know what it takes to connect or what it looks like. When I say I can't connect, what I mean is I click on the "Detect" button and watch the two satellite counters on the GPS tab of BCN for 15-20 seconds, and both stay at 0. Most of the time I am working inside my house, but I go outside for these detect experiments to a place where my Garmin 310 is able to get a fix. In addition to the above settings, I have tried random variations on the port/baudrate combos, although obviously I haven't tried all possible combinations.

Also, I have tried leaving the device in a certain window sill of my house, powered up, for several hours. In this location my Garmin 310 is generally able to get a fix, although it can't do so elsewhere inside the house.

I'm continuing to try different things and looking for info on the web, but I seem to be a little hung up here so any suggestions would be appreciated. (Pharos help is closed until Monday morning.)

Thanks! The software looks great, and I'm getting excited just seeing the detailed topos on the screen.

OK, one error found but still no GPS position fix. I understand now that clicking "Detect" detects the GPS connection, not the satellites. So, new procedure followed: go outside in view of sky, click Detect, wait for response, then click "Connect" - then wait 2-5 minutes, still nothing happens, satellite counts remain zero.

The Program port seems to be what they reccommend. Of course, the hardware port is more important, and they don't seem to sepcify that in the documentation. If BCN finds a shared Program port, but the hardware port settings are incorrect.

Pharos does suggest to turn off incoming beam; why that makes a difference I don't know.

Were the COM6 and 9600 baud the settings that it came with? 57600 baud is suggested as the baud; I don't know what they want for the hardware port. After detect finds something, push connect.

When connected, are you seeing the GPS Time update or any satellites in the picture? Anything to indicate it is connected but still looking for a fix?

Yeah, got a fix now! Very cool. Thanks for your help!

I meant to mention in my last post, after I started doing Detect-then-Connect, I started getting a GPS time for the first time, but it was incorrect - Nov 06. But no sats showed on the picture or in the counters.

After getting your message, I changed the baud rate to 57600, and immediately started acquiring satellites on the screen, and got my first fix in about 10 minutes. Inside the house, too. And it's heavily overcast with occasional rain, so not best conditions.

So, the settings that worked were Programs=COM4, Hardware=Com6/57600baud for the Pharos 535.

I'm new to this PDA thing but I'm trying to get squared away.  I've read this post and I've tried most everything here.  I have a x51v with a Dell Bluetooth GPS.  It works great with the Dell navigation software.  BCN loads and then I try the Detect and Connect.  It detects the GPS very quickly and then I try to connect.  About thirty seconds later BCN tells me it isn't receiving any data through the port.  I exit BCN and go to Dell Nav and it is receiving data.  What do I do now???

In 2.0, apparently, our device detection scheme is finding the "Shared GPS device" by default. This may have caused some trouble for some of you that have been able to use a specific port with other programs.

It sounds like you are doing the right things. Only a few suggestions:
  • Make sure the Dell Navigation Software is using the program port you set up and not the hardware port.
  • Try turning off Options->GPS_>Timeout warning. It's possible it is disconnecting too early. You can leave it off if it works fine without it.
