I bought the software because it comes closest to what I'm looking for... but it is only barely adequate.  I would love it if there were a way to get higher resolution aerial maps; the resolution that is currently fetched from terraserver is so bad it barely shows the trails I'm looking for (and only if I know where to look).

1GB of RAM is nothing nowadays... and if storage IS an issue, then look at what Virtual Earth Mobile does (and does for free, mind you).

Hehe.  Never mind.  I looked at the download screen a little more closely and noticed a checkbox for "1:1m"... I think this will solve my issue.

Yeah, clicking on the "1:1m" checkbox lets you get a much higher resolution map.  But WARNING: downloading that map from terraserver could be an all night affair (even using a 802.11b connection)--if you're like me and want a 20x20 mile area around your house.

The resulting file is about 430 MB on my SD card.  So I suppose a good rule of thumb is about a meg per square mile.

I did notice some aberrations: the places list (from USGS) isn't putting icons in the correct places.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

USGS Place data is only as what has come out of the USGS database.

See:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/

If something differs from what you see there I can look into it.

In some cases, you will find that the points just give you the general area. Lakes in particular seem to be offset to one side, while summits are well centered. I imagine some of these points were surveyed before GPS was as accurate as it is now.

They will never be quite as accurate as GPS readings that you record yourself.

Is it possible to download the COLOR maps from terraserver?  That would be much more readable than the current B/W ones.

...And yes, you're right.  The USGS is wrong.  The website you gave shows that my high school almamater is at 32.6486656 -117.0066924...and when I type those coords into google earth, it brings me to the same place that Crittermap puts the label: on top of the MIDDLE SCHOOL, not the HIGH SCHOOL.  The high school is about half a mile south east of there.

Sheesh.  If this is how accurate government mapping services are here in our own back yard... it's no wonder that our Airforce accidentally bombs milk factories in Iraq, huh?

Sounds like a case of things being out of date rather than wrongly measured. It is very likely that there was a high school there 50 years ago or so. Check for a feedback form at USGS.

Are you talking about the "Urban areas" from TerraServer? Those are pretty neat where available (near major cities). But be prepared. They go up to 1:0.25m scale and will fill up your storage card even faster. We are looking at including them, but we will also want to include more selective downloading so you can get focused detail on certain areas. A 20x20 region would take up maybe 6.4Gigabytes at 1:0.25m scale.

For now, you also have the topo maps, that do have color but less resolution. They are not as helpful in cities as in the backcountry.
