Is there a free PC topographic desktop map application that can create routes as a GPX file? I have seen some free non-topographic map applications that can do this. I would like to create routes that could be transfered into Backcountry navigator as a track.

I found a program which will allow me to create a route by drawing one. It is called "USAPhotoMaps". I can draw the route (with a .txt extension)  , then covert it to a track (with a.GPX extension). This track can be put in Google Earth just fine. But when I try to import the GPX file into Backcountry Navigator I get a error message saying  "Exception Importing File...Formatexception"

Any ideas why GPX files from USAPhotoMaps will not work?

There could be something different about the formatting in the files that throws us off. If you send some of those GPX files to support at backcountry navigator dot com, I'm pretty sure I could track it down.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have sent your support a sample GPX file and a jpeg of the converted kmz as it appears in Google Earth.

Some uninitialized timestamps seemed to be throwing it off.

This should be fixed in 2.0.9, now available.
