Downloading Places/Placefinder

If you encounter an error trying to download places or using the placefinder, check to see that you are otherwise internet connected.
The problem may be in firewall /internet security settings.
BackCountry Navigator uses a process called SQL replication to retrieve places from an internet server.
To see if this is the case, disable the firewall temporarily.
There may be more specific settings that will allow BackCountry Navigator to get places. I did not find that Windows XP firewall would block the places download. However, another customer did have an issue after installing Norton Internet Security 2006.

This is a troubleshooting guide that might help with the firewalls.

I have disabled Windows Firewall temperarly without success. I am able to view/download webpages on Pocket Pc, so I'm thinking that I have a suitable connection? Any ideas?

It is possible for places synchronization to fail when internet connectivity is good, but that is usually resolved by the troubleshooting methods mentioned by Microsoft in the above link.
In one case, it failed because the pocket pc, unnecessarily, had a proxy server. This is unnecessary if going through a PC that does have one.
The BCNavlog.txt file in the Pocket PC \My Documents directory often has more information on this error. You can email that and I can take a look at it if it continues to fail.

Hey sounds like the exact same problem I am having with my x50v. I have downloaded maps before, but in the past 2 days for some reason I can't. I have not changed any settings and have tried through 2 different WiFi spots and through ActiveSync. I am not having any problems getting online, I just can't download any map info. I keep getting the "Unable to download places data. Verify stable internet connection and try again." Again I have no other problem with getting online through my PPC. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. I also tried disabling my firewall, still no luck. Thanks

Based on the evidence, this sounds like there is a server problem that came up fairly recently.
I'm trying to get in contact with the place where the places data is hosted to find out if there are some server configuration differences. i should be able to track it down.

Any luck trying to figure this out? Is there anything else we can try? We are wanting to go camping/geocaching this weekend. Can we download map info to our desktop then move it over? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm hoping to get that server back running properly
Map Downloads should still work if you know some longitude and latitude to download from. The only reason they would fail is if the longitude and latitude are out of range.
The easiest way is to center the map where you want to download images. You can create a new map datafile, then import your GPX file first. You can load the waypoints on the list and center on one of them.
The Download dialog always start out at the center of the map screen. Initially when you have no maps or points, this may be undefined.

Thanks... seems to be working with the Lat and Lon coordinates. Keep up the good work.

Given the uncertain future and reliability of the places server we connect to now, we are trying something different with version 1.2.0.
This has been no small effort by the development team. We've moved forward our plans to set up our own server with two million USGS names, and designed a simple means to share that data for place finder. We got something working just today, although we still want some people to try it out to make sure it works. There should be less firewall issues, a good thing.

If you are needing volunteers to help test a beta version let me know. I would be happy to help out.

For now, be sure to try 1.2.0.
Version 2.0 is not quite ready for beta release, but I'm hopeful we can roll it out within a few more weeks. While it won't *look* much different at first, there are some big changes underneath and a new data format. Everyone registered here should get a notification about it.

I'm a COMPLETE newby, so pardon any stupid questions...
Backcountry Navigator cannot find the Terraserver site, while all other internet connections are working fine.
Since the last post here is more than a year old, I'm hoping someone has found a solution.
I'm on a hp iPAQ 5455, connected to a Windows XP Pro desktop.
I also tried from the local Wi-Fi hotspot with the same results.
Without this direct to the PDA service, The software will be of limited use to me.
Is there some way to download to my PC, and then transfer the map data to my handheld?
Thanx in advance,
Woe

Are you able to get to
www.terraserver-usa.com
from the Pocket Internet Explorer browser?
