Alternate way of loading maps?
I'm going trail riding saturday, so I got the trial, tested it on some local trails, and now I'm trying to download the maps from mytopo.com
It's been running all day, it says 7 % of 56110 and it's retried thousands of times.
Is there a way to download in bulk and copy to the phone? I'm trying to get the whole area as we go exploring in the national parks, and never know where we will end up, TN, NC, SC, who knows wherever the trails take us

You are trying to download about 1.2 Gigs of data. Do make sure you have enough room for it.
If it shows a 1000 retries, that is 1000 retries for the current tile, so it has lost connectivity - it's not a server problem. The phone may have gone to sleep or at least slept as far as wifi is concerned. Is it plugged into power and the wifi sleep policy set to never?
So from your comment, I conclude that to find the size of the file being downloaded, multiply the number reported by 0.022 and that will give you the approximate file size in megabytes. Is that the right math?
MyTopo.com tiles are approximately 22K, through they are not of constant size. So that math is correct.
Mobile Atlas on PC is what you want. HUGE selection of source maps, select which zoom levels you want, select area & save. Move saved folder to phone & go.

Not so huge anymore, as of 2011-04-06 09:22:29 UTC. Seems like OpenStreetMap is he only source they support now.
