Constantly have to re-start map download

By thefamntn - Posted on 04 August 2009

It used to not do this.  I could start the map download before bed, and it would be finished in the morning.  So far today, I have had to restart the download 12 times for an 8 mile by 8 mile area.

I've gotten random messages "web exception" and something about "NOLOCK due to data movement".

Also, is it normal for it to take 10 or 12 hours to download an 8 mile X 8 mile map at 1m setting?

Thanks,
Tim

That doesn't sound normal to me. I've been able to normally download that in a lot less time.

I am seeing some of the same thing, though. I just got the "NOLOCK error". BackCountry Navigator is not creating that error - it is coming from the server.

Although it is uncommon, I think TerraServer-USA is experiencing some turbulence right now.

It is always good to contact tsmailbx@microsoft.com to report any problems. Although it is rare to get a response, the problems that are widely reported are often silently fixed.

This week, downloads from Terraserver-USA are completing much more smoothly, at least for me. I think the server errors may have been resolved. Has it improved for anyone else?

I'm new to BCNav; I'm on the trial version.  I've been noticing the same thing.  Happened multiple times last night, and again just now.  Would be nice if it didn't stop completely, if it would just skip that tile and at the end say "4 of 800 tiles did not download" or something...?

It's possible, but there is a tradeoff.

Right now we are doing up to two retries for each tile that isn't found. After that, we assume the connection's bad and terminate the download.

If we simply moved on to the next tile, we could have a case where an unsuccessful download takes three times as long as a normal download and yet retrieve 0 tiles.

yeah, I realized something like that too.  The goal would be to come up with a reasonable algorithm that would do what the user intends, have all the maps downloaded in the morning when I wakeup.  Do whatever it takes.

Maybe there could be a "I'm going to sleep now, be finished when I wakeup, dangit" checkbox where it will never terminate the download until the user clicks "stop".  If terraserver truly goes offline, then there is obviously nothing we can do.  However, in practice I've never seen it unavailable for more than a minute.

So, it seems a tradeoff between walking around in cell service and battery life, vs I'm connected via activesync and there is no reason I should quit trying.  Hey, maybe you could just detect from activesync that the device is connected and skip the whole checkbox idea.  I think that would make a good improvement.

Same problem here.  Map downloads are constantly interrupted by "web exception" and "malformed disk image".

That and it seems to take forever to get a gps fix.  I've got the Verizon Omnia i910 with the official update that unlocked the gps.

I wondered if the problem was the phone's synchro program interfering with the initial installation of the program, but I couldn't find 2.7.8 cab file to copy to my micro sd card to get around the synchro program.

I'm about ready to throw in the towel on the free trial.

In any case, thank you for trying it out.

"Web Exception" is a 503 that seems to be occasionally thrown by Terraserver, I'm seeing it after abotu 3000 tiles. Sometimes retrying a few times will restart everything, sometimes not.

However, the DiskImage error you mention is indicative of a corrupted file.

That makes me wonder if the Synchro program you mention is interfering not with the installation, but with the database file. Is it something that synchronizes your file continuously.

While there aren't necessarily a lot of people using BCN with Omnia, there are several that have had good results. Is it slow to get a GPS fix in other software too?

I am still having trouble getting a reliable connection to TerraServer. I don't think it relates to BCNav at all. Desktop is always faster than WinMobile, but I get SQL database errors with the mobile version. Corrupted files I think, because they won't copy from the device. That only seems to happen after repeated restart of download. A loop that repeats until the next tile is DLd would be OK by me.

Version 2.7.9 of the Desktop Version uses a persistent retry loop.

You may have to explicitly uninstall the previous version before installing this one.
