how much memory needed to use MOBAC satilite maps?

By troyboy162 - Posted on 04 June 2011

has anyone done extensive testing with high detail maps from google earth or simular? Id like to buy a new phone and 75% of the reason is this app. currently the droid X2 only has 512mb ram. Id buy it if I knew that was more then enough ram, but im afraid with google earth sat images the phone may run out of ram in a hurry. Any first hand experience with 512mb ram and detailed sat images on BC?

p.s to the developer... Nice job! This program looks perfect for offroading. Thank you!

I also am aware that the new MOBAC can no longer use google earth as a source. lets say If it were to work again, Id like to be able to use it.

Google Earth tiles are most definitely *not* coming back to MOBAC. It was illegal in the first place, since Google Maps forbids mass downloads in its terms of use.

There are good map sources in the app. Of course, good is up to you to decide.

512M won't be enough - but the storage card typically has 16 GB or more. That's where we put map tiles, and where you should too.

so just to be sure i didnt confuse the question. the X2 has 512mb system ram, 8gb internal storage and XXgb external SD card storage. are you are saying 512mb system ram will not be enough to run the program with google earth map tiles even with the map tiles stored on the XXgb SD card?

NO, I AM NOT.

512 MEG will be plenty, because an individual app can only take 24 MEg anyway.

XXgb SD Card will be plenty. We don't use RAM to store tiles.

Were you asking if
Is 512M enough RAM to run the app? Yes, and it isn't a small amount.
Is XXgb enough room on the storage card to store map tiles? yes.
Is 512M enough to store all the tiles in RAM? No, but we don't put all the tiles in RAM at once, so that question is irrelevant.

thank you!
