Map Preview
See also: newsletter

As discussed in the last Android newsletter, preview mode allows you to plan and prepare for your adventure by giving you a choice of maps to browse. You can then choose specific regions for download for offline use.
Feel free to post feedback about this feature and how it can best be used.
Because this feature requires internet access, it may be undesirable for BCNav to start in preview mode when internet access is unavailable, or expensive. Perhaps this can be a preference that the user sets. Any thoughts?
The current version of BackCountry Navigator (in Windows Mobile) starts with a blank screen, and allowed you to define maps starting with this blank slate. Unfortunately, this caused many to give up on BackCountry Navigator, saying, "this software doesn't have any maps!" It is hoped that, along with its other benefits, this preview will allow people to see what is available right away.

The map preview is looking good.
I would make preview mode a startup default (so people know how to get maps when they are just getting started), but allow it to be reset in user settings.
So the Startup Options setting could be something like:
Preview Mode
Last viewed map
Browse downloaded maps on device
For me, I would always start with the last viewed map, unless loading a map was really, really slow.
I think this is a good approach
having the option to display the preview mode at startup would be a good idea.
looks good man.

I think we will want to prompt a user to choose a preview map on first run.
After that, whatever they last looked at will be the default, if it is a stored map.
If they were previewing at last run, it may be worthwhile to prompt, in case their current connection is more expensive.
Do most of you have an unlimited data plan? I don't have a data plan at all, but have wifi at home and office.
I agree with the sentiments already provided. Start in preview mode at first, but allow for the user to change, and provide recommendations as to what change, for which situation, such as using the app when data connections are not available.
I do have an unlimited data account.
