Multiple GPX tracks in a file

I've been using the program for several months now and it's worked flawlessly. I love it!

I'd like to know if the following is possible: can I import a GPX file containing tracks into a map and then start my own set of tracks that can be exported separately? As far as I can tell the exported file would contain both sets of tracks.

I want to import the file so I have a trail to follow. But I want to create my own tracks because 1) the pictures I take are tagged to my new tracks and 2) I may decided to wander off the trail and go off in different directions. But I like having the original trail imported for directions.

How might I do this without going in and editing the actual GPX file?

I wish separating two tracks in the same GPX file was a little simpler but I have a work-a-round.  I use Google Earth and a free program called DNRGarmin to create individual GPX track files.

Export the original GPX file to your PC

1 Open the original GPX file in Google Earth.
2.Select the file in the left hand pane.
3.Click the plus sign located by the file name to minus
4.Right click any track you wish to separate and save it as a KML file.

Download DNRGarmin (its free)

(When you run DNRGarmin, there maybe a couple error messages about ports and devices, don't worry about these)
1.Under the File menu, set the projection to WGS 84-No Projection (only have to do this once)
2.Open the KML file
3.Save it as a GPX file.

If you wish you can then transfer the new GPX file into Backcountry Navigator.

Another work-around is to open the .GPX files as text files and manipulate them directly. There are a lot of things you can do this way, so it's well worth your time to examine the text files and figure out their structure. And it's pretty easy, too, as the structure is very straight-forward.

As a safety precaution, never over-write the original .GPX file you download from the PDA. Just work with copies, and the worst that can happen is that your new file won't open and you have to start over.
