Multiple maps

I've tried searching the forum on this topic, but couldn't find an answer, although I'm sure it's here somewhere.

Will the Android version of BCN have the capability to open more than one map from a download source?

If I use the Android app to create an offline map from mytopo.com and then create another map of a different area using the same source, it seems that I can only access the last map that I downloaded.

Am I missing how to open offline maps other than the most recent download?

To switch between offline maps, use the menu item Map Src, then Offline Map, then you should be able to choose between whatever sources you've downloaded to date.

I think I see how it works. You don't actually get to select which of the maps you've downloaded to display. If you search for a place for which a downloaded map exists, you get the downloaded map. Otherwise, you get a preview map downloaded from the source you select.

Is there a way to get a list of the maps that have been downloaded so that you can select from that list?

There isn't really a concept of a "map" as what you downloaded in one shot. You have a canvas that is as big as the world.

It's simpler to think of it this way. There are two variables you control

  •  Layer on the screen: Map Src will control what layer you view on the screen. See Map Src-> Preview or Map Src->Offline to choose this
  • Location of screen's view: this is controlled by the longitude and latitude that you center the screen on. Most easily done through Find a Place

To answer your specific question, the easiest way to find map imagery you've already downloaded is to Find a Place, and choose one of the suggestions for recent places.

This does work differently than the Windows Mobile version, in case you've used that. A previous topic on this forum is called "Implications of a Single Map Repository" if you want to dig into the details.

I read the post on "Implications of a Single Map Repository" and I think I need to clarify something.

If I create an offline map for a location I plan to be in, am I guaranteed to have that map on my phone, especially if I don't have data service? It sounds like the downloaded map or a portion of the downloaded map could be deleted to make room for other map tiles.

Is this the case?

Right now, all downloads are additive and nothing gets deleted.

There is a request for a cleanup mechanism, but there is nothing there yet. It would be user initiated.

That's great news about not deleting any map tiles. I'm good for a couple of months, but eventually I'll need to recover some space on my SD card, so I'll throw in a vote for a user initiated clean-up feature.
