Reference Guide for Android Navigation Software
This is a reference guide for the buttons and menus of BackCountry Navigator for Android. See also the change log.
Menu Items:

Menu Items are helpful to get started. Typically, a user will first choose a Map Src and then Find Places to center the map. The menu no longer has an option for turning GPS on and off, this is on the main screen.
- Find a Places: Center the map screen at a known
-
Map Src: Choose a type of map to preview or view offline.
- Offline Maps Only:When set, BackCountry Navigator will only show map tiles that have been previously downloaded to your storage card through caching. When not set, it will be in preview mode, where it will also pull images from the internet.
- Maps: Choose a map source for display. If Offline Maps Only is enabled, all the choices will be ones that at least have some tiles on your hard drive. If Offline Maps Only is disabled, you can Preview the full list of map sources.
- File: Start a trip file to record waypoints, or load an existing trip file. Trip files *do not* contain map images, they just contain things that are displayed on top of the map.
- Settings: Change preferences for display, such as aligning map with the compass direction.
- Online Help: loads a web page that will refer you to this and other resources.
-
More: Shows additional menu items, including
- Share With Friends - allows you to tell others about the app through email, twitter, facebook, etc
- Feedback: Allows you to take a survey to prioritize new feature development.
- FullScreen: toggles a mode where Android's status bar is hidden.
Buttons
Buttons on the map screen are now invisible, but appear when you touch the screen.
Notice that the top button in the toolbar is for turning the GPS on and off. It replaces the Navigate menu item from earlier versions.
Map Screen:Home

You have several options on the map screen:
- Drag the map to recenter it
- Zoom buttons: use to display more or less detail. If you exceed the native resolution of the map data, it will scale to match. Press and hold the zoom buttons to zoom in four steps at a time. You can also pinch and Zoom or double click to zoom.
- Identify or mark a waypoint: Long Click (press and hold) is used to identify or mark a waypoint on the screen.
- View Basic Help: Will show the initial welcome screen.
- Mark areas for download: Use the middle button to start marking rectangles on the screen. It will then change to this toolbar.

There are now three buttons visible
- Toggle Selection: You can toggle selection off if you need to pan the map and mark more rectangles.
- Download maps: To capture a map section for offline use, use the folder toolbar button to start a download. This will download multiple levels of detail for whichever map sources you specify.
- Clear selection: this will clear any rectangles you've marked and go back to the regular toolbar.
Notice that the top button in the toolbar is for turning the GPS on and off. When the GPS is on, you will see different buttons:
Map Screen: Navigating

Some additional options are available when navigating:
- Mark GPS Waypoint: The flag button marks a waypoint at the current GPS location.
- Recenter View: The GPS Arrow button will auto-center the view on the current GPS location. The autocenter will be deactivated if you pan the view by dragging the map.
- Record Track: The round red button starts recording of a track. It will change to a blue square button that will allow you to stop the track recording. Track data will go into your current trip file. You should start one from the GPS Data menu.
Compass Screen

The compass View will use Android's electronic compass to show your view much like a traditional, magnetic compass.
Trip Computer

When navigating, the Trip Computer Screen will display realtime information about location, speed, altitude and heading. If a GOTO waypoint is active as in this photo, it will also show the direction and range to it.
Waypoint Screen

The waypoint screen allows you to enter details about a waypoint you have marked. Waypoints imported from a pocket query will also show html descriptions.
- The Delete button will delete a waypoint from your current trip file.
- The GOTO button will start tracking the distance and direction to this waypoint.
- The Symbol Button will allow you to choose a different symbol for the waypoint display.
