trimming maps?

By Banjo - Posted on 31 May 2007

OK, I learned how to download maps.  Now my 'Home' map is 40mb and I'm wondering: 1) is that bigger than most?, and; 2) can I trim a map once I've put too much on it?

When out this weekend, at one point the map was functioning, but the 'nav' screen stopped updating.  The outside circle was stationary no matter which way I went, but the arrow did seem to point to the selected waypoint.  Very confusing.  Later, it seemed to clear up.

Anyway, can I trim maps? Or do I have to start from scratch for a smaller home map?
Matt

Matt....My ""Home/Main" map is over 500MB.  At one point this would have been too large to be able to navigate effectively.  But, Nathan being Nathan, would not allow this to be.  He made changes and updates and now there are no problems using maps of that size. I don't know of a way to make a map smaller........however.....I could see the use of it..How about it Nathan?  Is this something we could see in the future??

I can see some advantages to trimming maps, but no I haven't worked on it yet.

But when you put it all in perspective, 40 Meg isn't that big.

It is good to create new maps for remote locations, but having a big map near your home location isn't a bad idea.

I dont honestly have anything useful to say, but I see Jeeperman has reached Jr. status, while I linger at newbie. So, I'm chirping in to hear myself talk.
;D

I'm with you Captain. ;)
By the way, my home map is 132MB.  I also have several in the 60 range. :)

Thanks for all the replies.  It's good to know that if there is a limitation, it's still a ways off.  So many times, when you actually start to use software, it turns out that they won't actually work the way you'd like to use them...

Does the memory of my unit play a part in limitation of map size?  I think my Treo has 64mb of memory - still more than my  home map.  Would a Treo run a 500mb map?

Thanks again,
Matt

P.S.  I just discovered that if you preview a post on this forum, when you return to the 'edit' form, all of your text is lost...

Does processor speed have any bearing on map redraw times?

To answer both of you....

Banjo....Not so much...with 64mb you would still be able to use a map of that size.

Indotguy.....yes the processor speed will affect the redraw times.... but... I don't think it would be that noticeable unless you had a few programs running @ the same time.

Capt. Chaos...... you wouldn't be trying to just pad your numbers would you??? ;) ;D

( I know, thats cheating ! )

I've been seriously swamped lately. The company I work for is restructuring, I have many home projects all needing attention, and the grass is growing ! This is all seriously cramping my web time, as well as caching and off-roading !

Know exactly what you mean.....I'm about to change companies....gonna be all over the country....looking forward to it....and dreading it at the same time!  Just a few more and you'll get that 2nd star!!  LOL  :P
