BackCountry Navigator 2.0 PDF Print

BackCountry Navigator 2 is the next generation of a product for outdoor recreation on your Pocket PC.

In Summer 2006, we had the first release of BackCountry Navigator 2.0 beta. The beta program allowed interested users to trial new features and verify functionality for the new versions, while giving their input and suggestions.  SInce that time, we have continued to trial new features and incorporate suggestions from users.

If you are a registered user, your license will allow you to run any 1.x or 2.x version. If you have tried BackCountry Navigator in the past but have not purchased a license, you will be able to try BackCountry Navigator for a 30 day trial period. Purchasing a license will allow you to use either 1.x or 2.x versions indefinitely.

Be aware that Version 2.x uses a new file format, (.db3). No file conversion exists from the 1.x file version(.bmd). Users should create new files from scratch to try out the features of the new version.  While it is possible for both versions to coexist , most users will choose one or the other to conserve space. The screens will also differ from what is seen in the software tour until more of the articles are updated.

BackCountry Navigator 2 requires Pocket PC 2003 or later. It will also require ActiveSync 4.0 or greater to properly recognize your device to install .NET 2.0.

Some of the enhancements introduced in the 2.0 version are:

  • Better support for square screen devices such as the Treo 700W or Ipaq 6515
  • Automatic detection of GPS devices.
  • Expanded support for troublesome GPS devices such as Ipaq 6515.
  • Improved behavior of bluetooth connections in power off situations.
  • Tracking functionality (also know as breadcrumbing). Users can mark, save and display tracks. More to come in this area
  • Download of Terraserver maps made 30% faster through streaming image downloads.
  • Import of trails from GPX files.
  • Export of tracks and waypoints in GPX format
  • Quick Zoom Control for fast selection of display resolution
  • Marking of lines and rectangles for distance measurements.
