VZW Samsung Omnia Works!
Currently the vzw version of the Samsung Omnia has the GPS locked down. I recently had my phone updated to an updated ROM and I'm happy to say the GPS is unlocked and works perfectly with the BackCountry software. This is by far the best topo gps program I found and I am very happy with it. I still kinda long for a slick interface like the Garmin Oregon has but still this works very well.

Great news!
Perhaps they heard from enough customers that said "what were you thinking" when they tried to lock down the GPS.
Did you have to do anything special with the settings? Just in case people ask.
Just set the gps settings in the software to com8 and the baud rate to 57600 and you're in business. The GPS icon is still missing in the settings but its really not needed.
